We bring you an eclectic style of music. A combination of Reggae, Reggaeton, Hip Hop and House. Their main influences include Major Lazer, Lunytunes, Dj Blass, Buju Banton, Kanye West, Sky (Producer), Tainy, Nineteen85, Boi-1da and many more! They have both grown up around musical environments. Iesha was born in Toronto, CA and her parents are Jamaican. Mario is Salvadoran/Mexican, born in El Salvador. He and his family emigrated to Canada in 1989 after briefly living near Atlanta, GA. The duo have been producing + releasing music and DJ’ing together for about 6 years and counting.
They met while working at a company about 8 years ago and have been friends ever since. They discovered they had a mutual interest in music when Iesha saw Mario reading the ‘Ableton Live 9’ manual during break periods at work. She then saw him using the DAW(Digital Audio Workstation) and decided she wanted to learn how to make her own music. She also took an interest in the art of DJ’ing which she has learned through dedication and support and natural talent in both arts. Iesha learned how to play the piano at a young age which has proven to be an asset when it comes to the music they create. Iesha and Mario believe that majority of their progress has come from sharing knowledge and skills that they’ve both brought to the table. They believe that “To whom much is given, much will be required.”
Iesha is a Behavioural Analyst who specializes in autistic children and teens. Mario volunteers as a Mentor for teens in vulnerable communities in Toronto as a way to pay it forward having grown up in a similar community in Toronto’s West end.
Both having grown up in such areas, they were both exposed to endless amounts of music genres thanks to Toronto being one of the world’s most multicultural cities. They believe that through music, much healing can happen, , mental health can be aided in a positive way and minds can become awake.
Woke Up A Rebel was born out of the numerous conversations they would have about the world as they experienced it. It was after a visit from Iesha’s father, that the idea for their brand came to life. They knew they wanted to let people into their conversations about music culture, music history, representation in music, spirituality and much more. That’s when they decided they wanted to offer their musical services to local clients including DJ’ing for hire. They DJ weddings, Jack & Jill’s, Pop-up shops, Freestyle cyphers, QuinceaƱeras, birthday parties and more. They began releasing music on Soundcloud. Later, they moved on to releasing music on DSP’s such as Spotify, Tidal and YouTube Music.
They released an instrumental EP called ‘This Is Us’ in the summer of 2020.
They have participated in online beat battles coming as far as 2nd place in 2 separate events.
They have since launched and hosted ‘Rebelations Podcast’ since April 2020. This is where they really express their views on sometimes sensitive topics but always with the intention of having an informative and open-minded conversation. They talk about music history, pop culture topics and very soon they’ll begin interviewing artists plus a video version of the podcast. Stay tuned for that.
The team at Woke Up A Rebel curate a Spotify Playlist to give artists an opportunity to have their songs heard by their followers. Updated on a weekly basis, it is followed by a mini DJ mix, every Monday featuring songs from the playlist.
